So, what bands do ya know, that u think no one has heard of before? Mine would have to be...
Demon Hunter.
Psychostick.
Richard Cheese.
Royal Bliss.
Cold.
Kutless.
Motograter.
Seven Wiser.
Unloco.
The Hush Sound.
That's all I can think of right now.
I heard of four out of that list.
lets see...
Acceptance
Thousand Foot Krutch
The Starting Line
The Myriad
Something Corporate
Red
Mute Math
Decyfer Down
Nevertheless
Acceptance is one of my favorite bands, and I at least know of Thousand Foot Crutch and the Hush Sound.
For me, it'd be most of the stuff I listen to. I know lots of people know them, just very few that I actually personally know. Neutral Milk Hotel, Great Lake Swimmers, Rufus Wainwright (outside of the song on the Shrek soundtrack), Iron & Wine, The Shins (outside of Garden State), The Spill Canvas, Devendra Banhart, The Dresden Dolls, et cetera.
Wow, see, I wouldn't actually think of most of those as obscure at all. Although there's a few that are completely new to me...
I love the connection of finding shared music fandom where you didn't expect it. Like, I'm a fan of a lot of local bands, so I don't expect anyone to have heard of them in the eastern states or overseas, so I get disproportionately gleeful when they have.
And, erm, I may possibly have only got into the Shins after Garden State, but you can prove nothing! *shuffles feet*
xD Erin. S'okay, that's how I first found The Shins as well. Love that movie.
And I forgot my favorite Belle & Sebastian. Another one that nobody I know has heard of, except the best friend, because I played them for her. And now I go away and will post no more. For a while.
One that I like that I don't think anyone has heard of is blackmore's night which is a folk rock group. And all of the stuff mentioned here I've never heard of lol.
Red, i've heard of, as well as thousand foot crutch. I got another one.
Lit.
Anyone?
They did that song, My Own Worst Enemy.
I've heard of a bunch of those:
Cold
Cutless
Mute Mathh
Something Corporate
Iron and Wine (awesome band)
The Shins (great lyricists)
Devendra Banhart (pretty trippy folk?)
Bell and Sebastian (I like them, from the couple songs I've heard)
Dresden Dolls
and Lit (pretty big here in SoCal)
I'm also a big fan of local bandss, and the good "rock en espanol" bands. Some local bands you might have heard of:
Pinback
Black Heart Procession
The album Leaf
Sprung Monkey/Unwritten Law/The Accident Experiment
Greg Laswell
Louis XIV... etc
other none-local bands I like:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Desmond Dekker
Air
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek
Sunny Day Real Estate
Fugazi... I could go on forever
That's right, they did make "my own worst enemy". That's all people seem to know that they made though.
Hmmm. let's see... I'm sure some out there know these groups... But for those that do not... arrien, A.C.T, frameshift, groove riders, (A band from Thailand.), buckethead, Mister Bungle, lacuna coil, evergree, bumblefoot, beer for dolphins, grim reaper, analog velvet, George Hrab,
Lit also did "Addicted". Lol, I love that song.
I love The Red House Painters and I know of Sunny Day Real Estate, and the only Air song I know is "Playground Love", but I like it.
Lacuna coil I've heard of. I don't really like them though.
tweed
i haven't heard of most of these bands.
let's see, kentucky head hunters, flyleaf, dark new day, and flaw. oh, and lacuna coil.
Flaw, dark new day, and flyleaf, I have heard of. I have heard songs by flaw and dark new day, but nothing by flyleaf, just their name. I've heard their really good though.
Flyleaf sounds like Avril Lavene gone... angry? I've heard of Lacuna Coil. Ok, here's some more:
Thievery Corporation
Massive Attack
Yo La Tengo
Trail of Dead
Failure/Year of the Rabbitt
massive attack are great. actually, the theme song to house is part of a massive attack song. forget the title off hand.
It's Teardrop. And I'm sorry, but Massive Attack and Yo La Tenggo don't get to be on any obscurity list ever. They've both had multiple pop-chart hits. That doesn't mean they're not awesome, Yo La Tenggo especially, has one of those careers that ecclectic songwriters dream of, but obscure they certainly aren't.
Okay, some that I luuuuuurv, and wish had more acclaim than they do.
The Basics
Jackson Jackson, which is Harry from the Cat Empire's side project. Cat Empire too for that matter.
Gotye
the Panics, though they're taking off a bitt lately, Wheeeee!
Elbow.
Blue King Brown. If I love them hard enough, Natalie will actually take over the world.
Mia Dyson
Josh Pike
The Waifs. Have got about as big as they're gonna get, but could always stand to have some more love. So awesome.
Jeff Lang
Claire Bowdich, though she's about to move to the US, so watch out!!
Salmonella Dub
Seasick Steve, random old yank blues singer who I saw at a festival once and was just all kinds of special!
Abbe May
and a few Aussie ones who are huge here, but may be unknowns elsewhere so I'm plugging them... John Butler Trio, the Herd, the Hill-top Hoods, Faker.
manafest, skillet, still remains, demon hunter, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, emery, Anberlyn, Hawk Nelson, Love sick Radio, That's it for me... anyone heard of these?
Ah, I love the Cat Empire, they were here about a year ago, and although I didn't get to go, I heard they're great live. If you like Iron and Wine, you should see a live performance, it's twenty times better than the albums. I've also heard of Skillet and Amberlin.
Skillet, As I lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Emmory, I have heard of. Awesome bands.
Got another one.
Blind Guardian.
I looked up Flyleaf, but what I didn't expect was that the singer was a girl. She reminds me of the girls they use for animes someties. I don't know y, maybe it was the way she sang.
Infected Mushroom. Kaiser Chiefs. The Streets. Dizzzee Rascal. The rosebuds. Liquid Tension Experiment.
Well I've heard of and have some cds by belle & sebastian, the streets, and the waifs.
I've heard some of the other bands listed.
I also like, just for starters:
Women in docs
precho
avi
secondhand sarrenade
plumb
There's more. I'll get back.
grin
Jen
Women in Docs! Eeeeeeeeee! *fangirls* Ahem.
The Cat Empire live are one of the most awesome things ever, and a million times better than their recordings. They're just all so damned tallented, and high energy, and happy to be there, and none of them ever stop for a second the whole time they're on stage!
You know, I've never heard of Iron and Wine until this week, when they seem to be getting recced everywhere! They worth chasing up, do you guys think?
Iron & Wine are amazing, one of my very favorite bands. Sam Beam is a beautiful man. So um, yeah, I definitely recommend them and think they're worth knowing. Lol.
I'll have to check out iron and wine.
bands you might have never heard of:
sandwitch
hale
cueshe
orange and lemons
eraserheads
rivermaya
pacific soul
ekolu
ho'okua
three plus
B.E.T
kawao
kani makou
most bands are from other places, so I'd figure you've never heard. give them a listen, you'll find there music pretty good
They sound like they are japanese.
Ok, I got another one, o and I have heard of As I La Dying, but only the song "I Never Wanted" off of the new album "an ocean betwen us". I'm not a big big fan of screaming, but that song is really good.
Heres mine.
Arch Enemy.
I forgot one.
Kill Switch Engage.
chris trapper
I like most of DancingAfterDark's list. :) Well except for Devendra Banhart who annoys me to no end.
Went to an avant-garde music festival last week; list of the better acts I saw there who I'm pretty sure very few have heard of:
Cluster
Keith Fullerton Whitman
Eric Copeland
Blues Control
Susan Alcorn
Looking at my show calendar:
Saw Islands live last thursday.
The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra last friday
Stuff coming up:
Jack Rose
Black Twig Pickers
Fern Knight
Su Shu No Fune
Bell X1
The Field
White Rabbits
M83
Swervedriver
Jamie Lidell
Battles
Jose Gonzalez
Helena Espval/Masaki Batoh
Dan Deacon
Sharon Kraus
Ulrich Schnauss
Fleet Foxes
Boris
High Places
No Age
Elf Power
Etc...
I have never heard of any of them before.
I Am Ghost.
Hahahah, I definitely have to be in a very specific mood to listen to Devendra Banhart, and when I first heard "Little Yellow Spider", I was convinced I hated them. *shrug*
Also, Yo La Tengo and such bands may not make the obscurity lists as far as how many chart hits they've had, but they do make it as far as the number of people I've come across in face to face interactions who know of them. That could be because I live in Hickville USA, but either way, that's what I've been basing my list on. And Kimya Dawson would've been on it once upon a time, but then along came "Juno" and now lots of people know who she is. Although still not many that I know actually like her. Um ... The Magnetic Fields, Wolf Parade (can't remember if they've been mentioned already), The Decemberists, Angus & Julia, Of Montreal, the Pixies and the Weepies (again, not necessarily obscure or anything, but by my standards they are), Maria Mena, Regina Spektor (although not so much anymore), Feist (except for that one iTunes song she had) ... I could go on and probably never shut up.
I think I've heard one song from M83, and I love Jose Gonzales, excellent guitar player. I used to like Kill Switch Engage in my more emo days. I've heard a few songs from Wolf Parade, and the Magnetic Fields, and definitely the Pixies.
Ok, some punk bands:
The Weirdos
Buzzcocks
Rites of Spring (original emo, that sounds nothing like the poppy shit)
Bad Brains
Vandals
Alien ant farm. I have only heard one song by them "smoothe criminal", and I'm not sure if they did anymore.
House of Heros, Run Kid Run, Haste the day, Sleeping Giant, Hmmmm. what else?
So many artists do the whole trippy folk thing way better than Banhart does. Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides, Wooden Wand, Big Blood Joanna Newsom and PG Six are a few examples. But yeah I can see how most of what you listed aren't exactly well-known in "hickville, USA." Gotta love the Magnetic Fields; Stephin Merritt has one of the most brilliant minds...ever. :) Living right outside of dc, I've heard of plenty of those punk bands (fugazi, bad brains, rites of spring, minor threat, etc.)
Hah. I have heard of haste the day. I'm not a big fan of how he screams, but when they sing, nice.
Mmm, Joanna Newsom. Forgot about her. "Ys" didn't do as much for me as "The Milk-eyed Mender", but I love her stuff in general.
Fugazi and Rites of Spring, I know. And my sister is a Killswitch Engage fan, along with the Human Abstract and other such, but me, not so much.
Alright, Bon Iver, Skinny Love just came on my playlist, and it's making me feel all heart-achy, so I'm gonna spread the pain, I mean love. Bon Iver Bon Iver Bon Iver. Also Elbow.
You know, I was scoffing at Feist making the list, seeing as she toured here recently and it was absolutely huge, the mainstream media was all over it. But you're right, before the 1 2 3 4 song? Absolutely nothing.
I can totally claim old school, pre-juno love for Kimya, but only cause I was completely obsessed with the I Like Giants song.
Jamie Ladelle is really fun live! I'm always a bit suspicious of the one-man band DJ arrangements, but he pulled it off.
Jose Gonzales also gorgeous live. Mellow and drifty. Saw him in the middle of a scorchingly hot afternoon on the last day of a three-day festival, and he was just exactly what we all needed. Also, his cover of Teardrop is stunning like a really really stunning thing.
On the, chart hits don't make for high profile thing, yeah. I guess I agree up to a point. I think maybe Yo La Tengo is a special exception, one of those musical chameleons.
Yeah, kind of getting sick of Feist. Broken Social Scene is pretty cool, kind of reminds me of a mellower Sonic Youth, with some of the rhythms, and the different people on vocals.
Another band I wish would make more music is Tokyo Police Club, their one album I've heardd is like 20 minutes long, but very enjoyable music.
Jamie Lidell solo was indeed great live when I saw him a year and a half ago. He just started touring with a full band which I'm pretty psyched for. I'll probably catch Bon Iver at the beginning of August; missed him when he came through here with Black Mountain a few months back. DancingAfterDark, have you heard the 3-song EP Joanna Newsom put out with a full band last year? Much better than YS IMO. Oh and I'm surprised the Mountain Goats haven't popped up on your list yet. :)
Let's see who knows these groups/artists:
Pat McGee Band
Guster
Mesh
Dope
Forty Foot Echo
Fifth Avenue
North
Five
Modern Talking
S Club Juniors
Dj Oetzi
Dj Bobo
C21
Gareth Gates
Darius
Scooter
Heather Dale
Tatta Young
Heather Ross
Chipz
Kasey Chambers
Kaci Brown
Amy Pearson
Amy Diamond
Busted
More another time..Later!
I know Forty foot echo. Their ok.
I've heard a couple songs from 40-foot echo. I have Lower Case, from Mesh, pretty good album.
hey david, I know kasey chambers and tatta young
And does s club juniors have anything to do with s club 7?
Jen
That's what I thought of as well.
Anyone with a severely twisted sense of humor, thick skin and a lot of patience needs a healthy amount of Sun City Girls' material in their collection.
The S Club Juniors went on tour originally with the S Club 7 group. They also did a song together called Reach.
hmm sick twisted sense of humor...may take a look at them. Wait, sick in what ways?
Pretty damn twisted and depraved. And hilarious.
Tons of desecration of political and religious figures who are held in high regard; nothing was sacred when it came to them. Definitely not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Incredible musicians, as well.
Speaking of bands whose names start with "sun", any metal fans like Sunn O)))? Very slow-moving doom metal that gives new meaning to the term "heavy."
may definitly take a look at them then.
Since October, Makeshift-Romeo, We The Kings are all from Florida.
I think I've heard of we the kings. Heres one.
White Cross.
The new Instruments album has Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel on one track. And it's pretty awesome as a whole.
One band that's a little out there that I know of is Me Without You. Also 18 Visions and Stabbing Westward.
I'm currently listening to a live recording of Fuck Buttons who incidentally, put out one of the best albums of 2008 thus far IMO. I think they've gotten some airplay on a BBC station or two but highly doubt any American radio stations save for XM or Sirius have given them any spins.
I'm not sure of how many people have heard of these guys but their called 36 Crazyfists.
Yeah, I have a few of their songs. My favorite one is the one they sing about Alaska... Kenai, I think.
Oh, I thought of another one, Coal Chamber.
The Darkness, besides I Believe In A Thing Called Love, Matchbook Romance, and Autovein.
The Darkness is easily the worst band ever.
hmmmm i don't know, dez has gotten me into some heavy rock like silent civillian, may check them out, since i hear that they r good and bad. Itunes here I come.:) I've heard of autovein. ONly heard one song by them though, "Bullet In An Angel."
The Darkness is not horrible! His voice is amusing, if nothing else. Someone probably kicked him in the balls too many times or something.
Y does that remind me of Coheed and Cambria's voice? O well, Now I really gotta check them out.
Oh jeez, another horrible band. Kinda like... nails on a chalk board.
Decyfer Down, nevertheless?
I only have one song by them, aand I'm keeping it because I like the guitarist on it. Its called "welcome Home".
otep, impending doom, flyleaf, slayer, emurae, 69 eyes, and job for a cowboy
yes, I've heard of most of these bands
Wait, Slayer has been around forever, I don't think they should be on an obscurity list. They shock people more than entertain them though. I personally don't like them, but the guitar solos are pretty nice.
i agree. They are a good band
Hold on, I never said they really had to be obscure, "all that remains" isn't obscure, as well as "august burns red". Well, I guess u could say they r if u don't listen to heavy metal, but they don't have to be obscure bands. I just wanna know what bands people have never heard of before.
dude, I love metal!
Is impending doom obscure?
Hers one that I just found out thanks to screaming turtle. I'm actualy surprised u didn't put it in here already dez. Their called "diecast". THey sound really good from what i've heard on itunes.
Within Temptation and Nightwish bler the line between obscurity and known, but they're cool. I love! WT, and I like the post Tarja nightwish (Wikipedia is your friend).
Yeah, Diecast are good, and thanks to your ftp site Mike, I found a few others I never heard of before. +44, Candiria, and Apocolyptica. They're all good.
those are great bands!
If u want some electronic stuff, try celldweller. Their kinda like a mix between rock and electronic. Pretty good stuff. Their also on my FTP if u want them.
That's music to get high to. It's trippy. Seriously, though, it is pretty good.
Wait, u can listen to it? I thought they were in M4P format. Winamp can play those?
No, I went on Bearshare and got them, which is how I had to get half of your stuff, since you insist on using itunes.
There's a winamp mp4 plugin. I have it.
Cool! Where can I get it?
Here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/mp4_input_plugin_for_winamp.htm
Thanks. That will be helpful.
Awwwww sweet! THanks a lot man. O, and I'm not sure if i said this one, and if i didn't dez u should've since u love him...
Evan's blue.
No problem.
interesting band.
What about buck cherry?
Ahh Crazy bitch. Good song, and "everyhing" r the only two songs I have by them.
There was a band from the late 1980's and early 1990's called the Darling Buds, who I loved, but not even any of my English friends had heard of them. If you're in the USA, you've probably never heard of Kasia Kowalska, either.
I know Lit.
Let's see... hmm... Na Leo? (Ray is an exception.)
No musicmaster91, those bands Ray mentioned that you thought were Japanese are actually Hawaiian. But that was a good guess. They do a style of music that lots of local guys call Jawaiian, which they derived from Jamaican/Hawaiian, as it is reggae music that comes from Hawai'i. Check it out. So awesome!
